True to his word, John returned in just under two hours. By that time, Alan had packed two boxes of things that he wanted to keep. Most of his stuff was pictures, photo-albums and framed pictures off of the walls, but he also took his grandmother’s bible and the family tree that she’d made many years ago. He didn’t know what use it was, but it was something to remember her by.

Alan’s two boxes were stowed in the trunk of the VW when John returned. It took less than ten minutes for them to get arranged and leave. Before they left, Alan visited the graves one more time, setting a small bouquet of flowers on each of the graves. It was easier today than yesterday, and he supposed that tomorrow would be even easier. Still, he hesitated when it came time to leave; there seemed so many things he still wanted to do around the place.

They left at 1pm with John and Lou riding in John’s Ford F350 and everyone else following in the VW. John’s truck was huge, but he had been a contractor and had most likely needed such a monster of a truck. In addition to the chainsaw sitting on the bed of the truck, a wench was mounted on the front.

Strangely, Alan found the sight of the wench soothing. It was nice to know that if the VW got stuck, then he could pull them back out.

They drove slowly and John had been right. The road did not travel in a straight line to the east, instead it meandered first to the north a bit and then back to the south.

The road they followed took them through the length of Tate county. The going was slow. There wasn’t any major pile-ups, but here and there vehicles had been abandoned and they had to drive around them on the shoulder. And, while no trees had fallen across the road, quite a few tree limbs and debris cluttered up the pavement.

Alan was surprised that it took nearly two hours to reach the sign that read Entering Mitchell County, Kentucky. He’d never been to Mitchell county before, but he knew that it was wider that Tate county and that Richards Island was on the far eastern tip of the county. That meant they had at least two hours if not more to go.

They sped up a bit once they hit the county line, but not much. The economies of both counties were primarily agriculture based and Alan began to find the scenery depressing. They passed what seemed like an endless procession of fields. The crops had already been planted before the flu hit and the earth was yielding up her bounty. Corn was a common crop and the flu hadn’t affected the plants in the least. The sight of all those plants growing was depressing because he knew that no one would ever eat them. Most of the crops would die and rot in the fields. Maybe the fields
